National Cancer Society of Malaysia




BACKGROUND

The National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) is a registered charity body established in 1966 providing education, care and support services for people affected by cancer. It is the first cancer-related NGO established in Malaysia, and the only charity body that provides an extensive range of cancer services, treatment and support to the public.
It is a registered charity with tax exempt status under the laws of the Malaysian Societies Act and Registrar of Societies Malaysia. NCSM was founded and led by Dato’ Dr S.K. Dharmalingam for 40 years. It was launched by the late YAB Tun Abdul Razak, and is now under the distinguished patronage of the Sultan of Perak.


MISSION STATEMENT
Financed entirely by voluntary contributions from the public, NCSM’s mission is “To ensure that no Malaysian fears cancer by creating an understanding of cancer that leads to prevention and early detection, and by providing the best possible care and support for those affected by cancer. “

MOTTO AND OBJECTIVES
With its motto,“Giving Hope. Celebrating Life.” NCSM aims to:

  • Educate - To decrease the incidence of cancer in Malaysia by raising public awareness on prevention, screening and early detection of cancer through education.

  • Care –To raise accessibility of cancer services in Malaysia by providing advanced facilities in  screening, diagnosis and treatment of cancer

  • Introduced pap smears into Malaysia in the early 1970s for the early detection of cervical cancer

  • Introduced mammograms into Malaysia in 1985 for the early detection of breast cancer

  • The first non-governmental center for nuclear medicine and radiotherapeutic services

  • Support –To empower individuals and those affected with cancer to maintain the highest possible quality of life.


NCSM CANCER CENTRES
With support from the public and donations from philanthropists, NCSM is the only charitable organization that provides a holistic cancer treatment and support to patients and caregivers – taking them through their journey in understanding and dealing with cancer in various phases through NCSM’s cancer centres:

… INFORMATION & SUPPORT

Resource and Wellness Centre
This is a one-stop information centre to deal with cancer and to provide empowerment for cancer patients, their sessions, cancer reference library, nutritional advice; and conducts feel good workshops (massage, aromatherapy) and wellness classes (yoga, qigong).

… SCREENING & EARLY DETECTION
Cancer and Health Screening Clinic
This is a one-stophealth and cancer screening diagnostic centre for men and women of all ages. Services include digital mammography, ultrasound, biopsy, pap smear, HPV vaccinations,bone density tests, colon cancer screeningand supportive services such as breast prosthesis fittings and teaching of breast self-examination.

… INVESTIGATION

Nuclear Medicine Centre
This is a referral centre where medical specialists from other hospitals refer their patients for nuclear medicine imaging to provide diagnosis on cancer spread (metastasis) in organs and bonesbefore initiating surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

… TREATMENT
Cancer Treatment Centre
This treatment centre provides radiation treatment for cancer patients at minimum cost or subsidized rates, and has a low or no waiting list. Its services include radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and high dose brachytherapy.

… CARE
Children’s Home of Hope
This home provides accommodation for children with cancer. It is affordable and easily accessible for patients and their caregivers coming from outstation for treatment and follow up at the Paediatric Institute of the Hospital Kuala Lumpur.  

NCSM’s service charges are either subsidised or offered free to eligible persons. NCSM also has branches throughout Malaysia including Selangor & Wilayah Persekutuan, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Penang, Johor and Sarawak. In Penang and Sarawak, palliative treatment is available.
